Quick Answer

Doolin is the best base for the Cliffs of Moher and the Aran Islands ferry, and it's famous for its traditional music pubs. The village is tiny, so book early. For more hotels, restaurants, and a beach, stay 20 minutes south in Lahinch and day-trip to the Cliffs instead.

Why Stay in Doolin

Doolin is a tiny coastal village with an outsized reputation, and it earns it on two counts. First, location: it's the closest village to the Cliffs of Moher — there's even a walking trail along the cliff edge from here — and it's the main ferry port for the Aran Islands, so two of the west coast's biggest days out start on your doorstep.

Second, music: Doolin's pubs — Gus O'Connor's, McDermott's and McGann's are the famous three — are among the best spots in Ireland to hear live traditional music almost every night of the week. The trade-off is size — there are only a handful of places to stay, they're mostly B&Bs and guesthouses rather than big hotels, and they sell out fast in summer. If you want the magic and book early, Doolin is hard to beat.
